And the Nominations are….

February 3, 2010

Albie and I are pretty pumped for the Academy Awards this year, as we are most years. But because we do a “Date Night” every week that always involves dinner and a movie we actually get around to seeing most of the nominations and there for feel totally “in the know” when it comes time to award season.  This year is no exception.

But before I get all giddy thinking about how giant the diamond jewelry will be or how funny Steve Martin will be, we must pause and take a minute to examine the nominations (HERE is a print ready list of the nominations so you can follow along or run right out to your local redbox and check some out for your self!):

Right off the bat, lets notice that Avatar and Hurt Locker both have 9 (NINE!) each.

Avatar’s Nominations:

  • Art Direction
  • Cinematography
  • Directing
  • Film Editing
  • Original Score
  • Best Picture
  • Sound Editing
  • Sound Mixing
  • Visual Effects

Do these sound like a list of nominations for a movie or a video game? Lets take a moment to notice that Avatar has NO (None, Zero, Zilch) nominations for acting or writing – and that’s because it didn’t deserve any. While I did enjoy this movie, and think it will not only win but it will deserve most of the nominations it earned (art, sound, editing, mixing, etc)  It should not be this year’s best picture. But I am almost positive I will be back on march 8th to eat crow because we all know how much Hollywood loves money and if there’s one thing Avatar did this year it was make money.

The Hurt Locker’s Nominations:

  • Performance by an Actor in a leading role (Jeremy Renner)
  • Cinematography
  • Directing
  • Film Editing
  • Original Score
  • Best Picture
  • Sound Editing
  • Sound Mixing
  • Original Screenplay

This is how I picture war. This movie depicts all the things I hate about war and the way I think things really are over in Iraq. Politics aside, this movie really does pull you in the for the whole thing and make you feel for the characters. The sound mixing and screenplay were really great. I’m not sure it will win Best Picture but I think a nomination was big for it.

So you don’t have the time to see all (TEN!!) Best Picture Nominations?

  • Avatar
  • Blind Side
  • District 9
  • An Education
  • The Hurt Locker
  • Inglorious Basterds
  • Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire
  • Up
  • A Serious Man
  • Up in the Air

Well don’t feel bad because we haven’t either. As a matter of fact before March 7th this is our list of “Movie’s to See”:

  • An Education
  • Crazy Heart
  • Princess and the Frog

Ok, so I totally added Princess and The Frog in hopes that Albie will take me to see it. It is nominated for 2 Oscars after all.

But some of my Favorites from this past Oscar season were:

Up! was too cute and I think everyone should see it. This has everything: Tears within the first few minutes, talking dogs and cute fat little kids plus a good story.

This was a good sports movie. Not in the same way that Blind Side was good (that was a better book anyway). I also loved Morgan Freeman in this (Nominated for Best Actor).

This was one of Quentin Tarantino’s best.  And again, Christoph Waltz was completely convincing as a terrible, awful Nazi but that for some reason you kind of liked (Nominated for Actor in Supporting Role).

I love George Clooney in most things and this was no exception. Interesting movie that has good timing for the state of our economy right now. Also how cute is Anna Kendrick? (Nominations for Best Actor and Actress in a Supporting Role)

***

So those are my basic thoughts on this year’s Oscars and the movies nominated. What were some of your favorite movies this year? Disagree or agree with some of the nominations? Wanna come over for an Oscar viewing party? I promise to serve wine and snacks while we judge everyone on the red carpet…
