Azalea Festival 2011…

April 12, 2011

This past weekend was Wilmington’s Azalea Festival.

{These specific pictures are not mine, found via google searches}

Having grown up here at some points this could more of a bother than a fun time with the increased traffic around town but there was always something awesome to do and I happened to be pretty involved in it.  In high school I was on the Azalea Festival Youth Committee and was head of their fund-raising.  Senior year I even participated in the Scholarship Princess Pageant (looked everywhere for a pic but came up empty!). When I didn’t win a place on that court I ended up even being an Azalea Bell with my friend Ashley:

This year the festival was a great distraction in missing Albie and getting together with some friends. The week started for me on Wednesday night when my good friend Megan (Hi Megan!!) shared her tickets to see Darius Rucker with me.

We both were pretty unfamiliar with his music but knew some vague Hootie songs. We met for a yummy dinner first and I had an awesome time catching up with her. I was so glad her job sent her down to Wilmington with concert tickets in hand! Darius puts on a great show and even for this anti-country music fan I had a blast!

Friday during the day my Mom took me to the Garden Party.

The garden party is a luncheon with drinks mixed with pretty weather and pretty flowers. The Citadel boys come in town and escort some of the queen’s court around so they add to a bit of the “southern charm.” The dress at the garden party tends to be very “Lilly Pulitzer” although this year I think some people were a little confused on this. I spend too much time perched on my blanket with my feet in the sun and a glass of wine in hand thinking judge-y thoughts. It’s way fun!

For Friday night I found myself in possession of 4 tickets to the sold out Avett Brothers concert. Honestly, I’d never even heard of them but the tickets were free and I had no plans so I searched out some friends to join me at the last minute.

Luckily my friends seem to be much more familiar with popular music so it was easy to find my friends Molly, Ozzie and Sharla to go with me. Ozzie and Molly had even seen them in concert before so they assured me I’d like them. Sure enough I had so so much fun!

The Avett Brothers are categorized as  “folk rock” according to their Wikipedia page and I guess that describes them – they are kind of bluegrass/pop/catchy/fun. That’s a musical genre right? Anyway, they were super fun and energetic so a great way to spend my Friday night!

Saturday morning Finley and I did normal Saturday activities like going to the vet, out to lunch etc. We even took a pretty good nap together since that’s a new hobby of ours. Then Saturday night I had plans to go downtown to the Street Fair with Jenny ( of the Jenny and Ali wedding in California we went to January).

We got there a little after 6 and walked around a bit before sitting our butts in a very humid but well stocked bar. It was the perfect night – a few glasses of wine, being hit on by some marines who were a little bummed to see our wedding rings, some fireworks and some more wine.

We watched the fireworks from a rooftop bar and right as the finale started so did the rain. I am sure Jenny enjoyed my fabulous sense of direction in the rain, at night but I eventually got us home and I can’t wait to hang out with her again. (Glee nights sound fabulous Jenny!)

Sunday morning I decided to head back downtown by my self and wander around the street fair again. I wanted to see what nonsense crafts I would “need” and be suckered into buying.

Although I shocked my self and only left with a T-Shirt and some new freckles. I met my mom for lunch and then got the best surprise phone call from Albie that he was on his way!

I wish every weekend could be as busy and as social! If y’all are ever planning a visit to Wilmington, April for the Azalea Festival is a perfect time!

    I recently un-earthed my Azalea Belle pictures and have decided that I’m going to find a way to sneak back in. Who cares if I’m 10 years past the age limit? I can still fit in that dress, and as a practiced Belle I think I would be a great mentor to new ones. Seriously though, one of my all-time most memorable experiences in all the Azalea Festivals-I’m so glad I got to be a part of it in that way! :)
