Flea Buggies…

I’d like to think I am a top dog mom. I’d like to think my little guy is about as perfect as they come.

Unfortunately despite these truths things flea buggies still happen. (“Flea buggies” being the endearing term I made for those awful annoying fleas that enjoy chowing down on my sweet dog’s skin.)

I can tell you we haven’t missed an application of Frontline and are really good about applying correctly. It takes both of us to split the fur and tell him what a good boy he is, but we do it correctly. Besides moving here nothing else really changed yet all of the sudden we discovered the fleas about 6 weeks ago.

We happened to have a vet appointment right when he had had them about 2 weeks and the vet gave us advice but didn’t think too much about it. Now more than a month later we STILL HAVE FLEAS.

Just thinking about these nasty bugs gives me the heebie jeebies. They beyond creep me out and the fact that I can SEE them on Finley just makes my blood boil.

More Frontline, picking the bugs off, vacuuming, flea baths and rug powders were no good so today we went back to the vet.

We are switching to a newer flea medicine call Comfortis that is a tablet instead of a gel and we have some yard treatment and a new house treatment – all safe for dogs by the way. Finley is also taking a tiny Benadryl to help calm the itching while we kill all these flea buggies.

Let me tell you though, this is not only a pain in the ass but it is also getting expensive. Hopefully it all works  like the vet said it would and we should now be flea free in about 2 days. Finley has been miserable and if it goes much longer I think he could qualify as one of those pitiful dogs in the ASPCA commercials that make me cry.

So far we are 2 hours into the new flea medicine and it’s killing the fleas! woohoo!

Have any of y’all had similar experiences with these flea medicines?

<> We give our dog (our only *baby*) comfortis. Last summer, after spending a lot of time at the beach our dog had fleas really bad (constant scratching, rash, etc.) The comfortis really did help a ton in a day or two! We also did a flea bomb at our house over a football weekend away. No problems since!

lil spencer has fleas too. Used Revolution, but had to get it from the vet. I was wondering what was a good over the counter remedy is. I use a flea comb too. Not sure why God created fleas? Is there a purpose to their existance?

No advice about flea medicines. But for clean up, make sure you vacuum as much as possible every single day for a good two weeks. Dump the bag or canister into your outside trash can immediately after each vacuum. I have cut up flea collars and stuck them in the bag to help kill fleas there too. I feel your pain and good luck!!

We never had a problem using Frontline until we moved down south. Now we use Advantix and it works pretty well. We should look into Comfortis, it sounds like a lot of you have good results with it!

My dogs are on Sentinel (Novartis) and have been for years. Not only does it cover heartworm prevention, but it also breaks the flea cycle. http://www.sentinelpet.com/index.html

They also get Frontline for ticks and to kill any fleas that they may get when they go outside. I’ve never had a problem either. Capstar is also a great product to get the fleas off initially if you’re still having an issue. Good luck!
